Getting Around the Golden Outback

Explore Australia's Golden Outback by rail, road and air. There are many options to take and it's just up to you to decide!

Travel by Tour

A range of packaged tours are offered from adventurous four wheel drive vehicles to luxury coaches. Join a tour and let someone else do the driving for you so you don't miss a thing. For more information on tours in Western Australia do a tour search.

Car Travel

Self driving through Australia's Golden Outback may take you into some remote areas where forward planning is essential to ensure your experience is safe, enjoyable and memorable.

Check road and weather conditions at Main Roads Western Australia before departure. When travelling on unsealed roads exercise caution. Rain can make some tracks and roads impassable.

Food and fuel stops are generally available every 100 to 300 kilometres. However, when travelling in remote regions such as the Outback Highway, it is recommended that you plan and check ahead.

Hire cars are available from Perth or in other major towns within the region such as Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Meekatharra. Road maps and directories are available from most newsagents and some convenience stores.

For more information about hiring a vehicle, do a hire search.

Bus Travel

Transwa operates regular coach services that connect all major towns in Australia's Golden Outback. These coaches are fitted with modern entertainment systems and provide comfort whilst travelling in regional Western Australia.

To find bus timetables for your future trip, visit the Transwa website for further information.

Train Travel

The Prospector train service travels to Kalgoorlie from Perth. The Avonlink travels from Northam to a number of smaller regional towns. Both train services offer a comfortable train ride with air conditioning throughout, cloth seats with footrests and some with power outlets for laptop computers.

For more information regarding timetables and intermediate station stops, visit the Transwa website.

Travel by Flight

Small regional airports are available for use by private charter. Some regional airports have commercial flights available.

Regional airports include Kulin, Laverton, Leonora, Narrogin and Wagin.
