4WD Four Wheel Drive Adventures

A four wheel drive (4WD) adventure is one not to be missed in Western Australia. With its rugged terrain and unpopulated plains, it's the perfect place to embark on an off-road adventure.

In a four wheel drive, you can delve into the most remote corners of this magnificent state.

Up north a treasure trove of spectacular landscapes, remote wilderness, isolated lakes, tempestuous rivers and white, sandy beaches are just waiting to be explored.

Four wheel driving, Dampier PeninsulaStock up on supplies and take the four-hour trek from Broome to Cape Leveque.

This pristine town - home to sparkling, aquamarine waters and fruitful fishing - can only be reached via dirt tracks, making it an unique four wheel drive adventure in itself.

Derby, a small town famous for its friendly hospitality and colossal tides, marks the beginning of one of Australia's classic outback drives.

The Gibb River Road is a 660 kilometre journey accessible between May and October.

The region is steeped in frontier history, Aboriginal culture and breathtaking natural wonders.

Along the way, discover Windjana Gorge - home to countless trilling birds and freshwater crocodiles, which are often spotted catching the sun's rays on the riverbanks.

Head deeper into the Kimberley highlands and you'll reach Bell Gorge, a postcard of cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear swimming holes.

The Gibb River Road adventure winds up in Kununurra, where you can marvel at the historic Bungle Bungle Range - one of the most fascinating geological landmarks in Western Australia.

Another superb spot for a four wheel drive adventure is Cape Le Grand National Park in Esperance.

Cape Le Grand is a wild coastal landscape featuring rugged granite cliffs, massive sand dunes, sweeping heathlands and untamed inland swamps.

4WD outback touring, Karijini National ParkYou can drive yourself, but for local knowledge and country style hospitality take a half or full-day four wheel drive tour with Aussie Bite Expeditions.

There are also plenty of four wheel drive adventures to be found inland, via Laverton and the Great Central Road.

And don't forget the infamous Canning Stock Route and Gunbarrel Highway - these routes journey through the heart of cattle station country.

Expect to see plenty of kangaroos, emus, wedge-tailed eagles and camels along your journey.

NOTE: Always inform someone of your travel plans - especially if you intend to go off the beaten track. Any four wheel drive adventure requires drivers to take necessary precautions to ensure a safe journey. The vehicle should be properly equipped with a comprehensive tool, puncture repair and first aid kit, as well as sufficient water and food. In the event of a breakdown stay with your vehicle - it is easier to find than an individual.
